Why Choose Turtle Lake?

There are many lakes in Minnesota, but very few can match the incredible beauty and serenity of Turtle Lake.  This lake is nestled in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest and 1/3 of its shoreline is undeveloped and natural. With its astonishing 15' water clarity, 140' depth, 7 islands and many bays, Turtle Lake is in a class of its own. The lake is 2066 acres, the perfect size for spending the day on the water without getting bored by seeing the same shoreline over and over again. In fact, we think you will be amazed at how quiet and peaceful the lake is,  and how few boats you will see on the water.

Turtle Lake is considered one of Minnesota's premiere trophy smallmouth bass lakes with bass weighing in over 5 lbs.  And when the top fishermen in the world come to your lake, that says something! Turtle Lake was chosen for final round of the 2017 Major League Fishing Summit Cup Championship. The six top finishers in the tournament battled it out on Turtle Lake in the final round. The lake did not disappoint the fishermen and Mike Iaconelli ended up taking first place with a total weight of 45lbs. 6 oz, followed by Edward Evans with 37lbs. 1 oz.  Turtle Lake is also an excellent walleye lake and its home to a variety of other fish, such as northern pike, largemouth bass, crappies, sunfish, and rock bass. The many islands not only provide breathtaking scenery, they also offer excellent fishing along their shores.

Wildlife abound on Turtle Lake. It is home to many waterfowl, loons, eagles, beavers and otters. In the secluded bays you may catch a glimpse of a black bear, deer, or moose as it comes to the water's edge for a drink. There are 4 active eagle's nests on the lake, so you are sure to find one soaring overhead or perched atop a towering pine.

Turtle Lake was made famous by the Hamms Brewing Company from St. Paul, MN, who chose Turtle Lake as one of the locations to film their legendary 1950s  beer commercials, "Hamms the Beer Refreshing...From Land of the Sky Blue Waters." Its crystal clear, sky blue waters are perfect for swimming and all types of water sports or for just relaxing on our beautiful sand beach, which looks out across the lake at the Chippewa National Forest. You may wish to relax in a hammock under the towering pines as you let the peaceful sound of the waves hitting the shore, renew your mind, body, and spirit; enjoy a meal at our lakeside log pergola, or gather together for an evening lakeside bonfire. A special delight is sitting at the beach with your morning coffee, as you watch the mist rising off the lake at sunrise. Whatever you do, you don't want to miss the breathtaking sunsets and amazing starlit nights, which occasionally offer a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Turtle Lake is truly a pristine, northwoods lake that is similar to the lakes you would find in the the Canadian wilderness. Once you are here, it is easy to see what makes Turtle Lake so special and unique and why our guests keep returning year after year.
